Partner, Thomas Loikith Receives the 2019, Hon. Peter Ciolino Professionalism in the Law Award from the Bergen County Bar Association
On October 16, 2019, Harwood Lloyd Partner Thomas Loikith received the 2019 Professionalism in the Law Award from the Bergen County Bar Association. This award was named in memory of Hon. Peter Ciolino (1933-2009), a distinguished member of the New Jersey judiciary for many years including serving as Assignment Judge of Passaic County and Bergen County. Judge Ciolino joined Harwood Lloyd on leaving the bench in 1997. Judge Ciolino was a mentor and close friend to Mr. Loikith. Mr. Loikith was law secretary to Judge Ciolino during the 1978-1979 court term. Mr. Loikith is the first of the Judge’s many law clerks to receive this award.
The Professionalism in the Law Award is presented to an attorney who is a well-respected member of the legal community and exhibits integrity, competence, high ethical standards, career achievement and service to the bar and community. The individual must be licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey, and have demonstrated outstanding character and continually displayed a firm commitment to the ideals of professionalism as epitomized in the New Jersey Principles of Professionalism.
Mr. Loikith clearly embodies all of the attributes that this award represents and more. Mr. Loikith is a partner in Harwood Lloyd’s Commercial Transaction Department, concentrating his practice in financial services law, commercial transactions, real estate, and business law. He has extensive experience in representing financial services clients, lenders and borrowers in commercial asset-based and real estate loan transactions, and the formation and counseling of small businesses. He is recognized as a preeminent attorney in New Jersey by Martindale-Hubbell and has been named as a Super Lawyer for many years.
Mr. Loikith was an adjunct faculty member at Montclair State University, teaching legal research and writing in the Legal Studies Department of the University. He also taught in the first-year legal writing program at Seton Hall Law School. In recent years, he has spoken at seminars regarding commercial loan documentation, Article 9 of the UCC, and the New Jersey Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act.
For many years, Mr. Loikith has been very active in both the Bergen County Bar Association and the Bergen County Bar Foundation. He is the Immediate Past President of the Bar Association having served as 120th president of the Association in 2018-2019. He has been on the Bar Association’s Board of Trustees for the past 11 years. He is also this year’s Chair of the Association’s By-Laws Committee and Nominating Committee, as well as serving as the Co-Chair of its Banking Law Committee, Corporate and Business Law Committee, Continuing Legal Education Committee and Memorial Service Committee.
The Bergen County Bar Foundation is dedicated to improving the administration of justice, promoting the study of law and legal scholarship, maintaining and enhancing the honor and integrity of the legal profession, as well as improving the public’s perception of the legal system. Mr. Loikith is the Immediate Past President of the Foundation after having served as its President from 2012-2018. He also served on the Bar Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 2007-2019.

Mr. Loikith is admitted to practice before the courts of the State of New Jersey (1978), the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (1978), the United States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit (1981) and the United States Supreme Court (1982).
